Enchanted Rock.

This past Sunday Michael Fowl and I drove up to Enchanted Rock and spent some time hiking around. We brought a change of clothes, and went directly there after the potluck meal at church. Once there, we paid the $5.00 per person entrance fee, parked the car, and started our ascent of the gigantic granite boulder known as Enchanted Rock.

After making our way to the top, we stopped to take in the wonderful views of the surrounding countryside (I must admit, while not up to Colorado standards, they were pretty good for Texas). We then set out to find one of the entrances to the elusive caves that run deep into the rock. After a little searching, we located an opening that actually went further that 10-15 feet, and plunged in. While I had thought ahead enough to bring a flashlight, I hadn't taken the time to check the batteries, which died once we were about halfway to the exit. Thankfully, Michael had brought his flashlight as well, and we made it out safe and sound, save for a few small scratches from the rough granite.

Our next course of action was to hike over to Turkey Peak, which is only slightly shorter that Enchanted Rock itself. We climbed to the top, and spent a little time looking around, then settled in to await the sunset. Our hope was that it would prove as colorful as the last time that I visited the park, and that we could get some pictures as it sunk behind Enchanted Rock. Sadly, while beautiful (what sunset isn't), it didn't compare with my memories of when I last sat there along with Cody Carnett a couple of months ago.

After taking a few more pictures, we hiked back to the car for the hour long drive home. Along the way we stopped and grabbed a bite to eat at Sonic, arriving home around 10:00 PM. We both agreed that it was a day well spent, and I, for one, hope to make it back there in the near future for more exploration of the caves, as well as to test out some of the rock climbing routes on the back side of Enchanted Rock.

P.S.
A special word of thanks to Michael and his wonderful Nikon, with which we were able to take over 170 pictures of our trip, some of which I will post here for your viewing pleasure.

We beat you to it Barnes. The Sarratt and Torres families were there on Thursday. (To see proof of this, please check out my blog [yes, this is a hopeless attempt to get some publicity for my little blog] at http://www.cynthiasarratt.blogspot.com)
